As an Elf Owl shifter, Kayden is the smallest one in his Parliament. But that hasnt stopped him from being an important member. An IT tech, he can hack his way into any computer system. Plus, hes in charge of his own groups security. Now, if he could only get their leader, Austin, to notice him for something more than his technical skills. Austin takes his job as the leader of his small Parliament of Owls seriously, which leaves little time for himself. However, he cant help but notice the cute, small tech, Kayden. But Austin knows he has no time for romance. Not if he wants to keep his group safe. Will Austin and Kayden find a way to get together? Or are they forever doomed to be alone?

Is there one central mechanism upon which all human thinking rests? Cognitive scientists Douglas Hofstadter and Emmanuel Sander argue that there is. At this core is our incessant proclivity to take what we perceive, to abstract it, and to find resemblances to prior experiences--in other words, our ability to make analogies. In The Essence of Thought, Hofstadter and Sander show how analogy-making pervades our thought at all levels--indeed, that we make analogies not once a day or once an hour, but many times per second. Thus, analogy is the mechanism that, silently and hidden, chooses our words and phrases for us when we speak, frames how we understand the most banal everyday situation, guides us in unfamiliar situations, and gives rise to great acts of imagination. We categorize because of analogies that range from simple to subtle, and thus our categories, throughout our lives, expand and grow ever more fluid. Through examples galore and lively prose peppered, needless to say, with analogies large and small, Hofstadter and Sander offer us a new way of thinking about thinking.

The barn owl (Tyto alba pratincola) has experienced declines in the Ohio Valley States due to loss of foraging grassland habitat over recent history in spite of being considered common prior to that time. Reclaimed surface mine grasslands are human altered landscapes that offer potential foraging habitat for multiple grassland obligate species and the barn owl might be one of those that benefit from these habitats. I exaamined time to first nest box use and number of barn owl nests in terms of the available nest boxes to determine the suitability of these habitats for barn owls acrss a three state region. I also measured multiple landscape variables that could have an impact on barn owl nest occurence in southeastern Ohio in portions of Muskingum, Guernsey, Licking, and Perry Counties.
